Hello To All Members,
I have a 6&1/2 month old malinois that had no problems with biting before he got all his adult teeth. Once I noticed that he was teething I stopped playing tug with him. Now that he has all his adult teeth he will not!! clamp down on anything,he has no pressure at all . He takes a nice full initial bite but immediatley lets the tug slip to the front of his mouth. I've tried playing tug and if he lets go he doesn't get it back but that isn't working any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Assuming there's no dental problem, I would try exciting the pup with the tug but don't give the pup a bite. Just put the tug away. I would do this for several sessions to get the prey drive up. We always put weak biters on a bungee. If they don't hold on, they loose the bite faster than they release it on thier own. If the pup was biting good before, then it should come back O.K. assuming the pup wasn't slapped for biting at some point. Then it may take awhile.
I wouldn't worry too much at this point. At this age the teeth may not be properly set in the jaw bone at this point. I would give it a month or two before being too concerned. We went through something similar with my pup at this age. When she bit if there was too motion it would hurt her teeth and she would release. I would just let him keep it on the full bite, and give it a little while for the teeth to settle in. I would be afraid to try and correct this at this point because if the problem is pain in the jaw any thing that you do now may make the problem worse.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
