A nice demo of the Premack Principle!
One pop-up said that without the Premack reward, the food would have been a punishment. I'm thinking I might state that a little differently. Maybe ... without the Premack reward, being called back for just food when what the dog wanted most was to go see the other dog would have been such a low-value reward AT THAT TIME that it would have seemed like no reward at all.
What do you think, Ram?
The Premack Principle is a fascinating tool. It goes beyond what is high-value to the individual dog, to what is high-value to the individual dog AT THAT MOMENT, and uses the principle that the dog will perform a less desirable action to get to do what he really wants to do at that time. I believe that's the gist, anyway.
Yes Connie, you are right. I should not have said that the food would have been a punishment. If I had given him just food at that time, he would have spit it out and any further attempts by me to feed him would have been, technically speaking "aversive". However, since I chained the eating behaviour before the premack reward , the eating behaviour also becomes valuable. That was the point I wanted to make.
Yes, I should have worded it better, but now too lazy to go and re edit the video
Jodi> Premack principle is why kids do their homework so enthusiastically, because they know that if they finish it , they get to go and play with their friends.
Why kids tolerate getting their tooth pulled out by a dentist because there may be ice cream at the end.
