Jodi, why do you feel you have to warn people?
I had a problem worrying about other people when I first got my dog but I don't anymore.
I still care that I look mean or weird but I've learned that I can't do any work with my dog unless I'm watching him and taking time to talk to people will affect that.
I know it looks weird when a dog approaches and you start doing things with your dog instead of keep walking or saying hi to them but oh well. You have to choose what matters most.
What do you even say to them? Besides, since you're warning other people then in your mind what's about to happen is an event and I'm sure your dog is picking up on that.
All my opinion based on the little experience with reactivity that I have
Hi Natalie, my dog is VERY reactive, people in my area tend to have dogs that they either have on flexi leashes, so the dogs are 15-20 ft ahead of them or they will bring their dogs over to meet any dog coming unasked, by calling out to them that my dog is NOT friendly it let's them know neither I nor my dog have any interest in meeting their dog and it pretty much guarantees they will keep their dog close to them, thus eliminating any chance of a fight or other negative encounter.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
I have no problem warning people - but I do it calmly and without getting upset. There is nothing more annoying than trying to walk my dogs and having some off leash or flexi-ed dog come running at us.
I simply call out something like, "Keep your dog back, please", "Hello! My dogs are in training, so please keep your dogs back" or "Hi there, please keep your dogs back. My dog doesn't care for other dogs. Thanks!".
I really don't understand why 75% of the dog owning population things all dogs need to meet each other. I work hard to keep my dogs neutral around others, but it is sometimes a challenge when they are being stormed by other dogs.
I'm calm and nice to them, and I can say people appreciate the warning, usually. I say my dog is not friendly or is afraid of dogs but I've even had a few people after I've told them who insist they're dog is friendly and will get along with any dog, including the one I just explained isnt. Because I walk the same areas and a lot of people know me from my other dogs they're respectful of me, just as I'm respectful of them. Its harder with the tourists because they are not quite as respectful.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
