In my experience with puppies, I've always made them take a nap in their crate. It's impossible for them to know how long they've been in there if they're asleep, and it gives me a chance to relax knowing I don't have to watch them like a hawk for house breaking. I usually let my pups play for 1-2 hours, then put them in a crate with a soft blanket or towel for 10-20 minutes, wake them up for a potty break, put them back to bed for another 10 minutes or so. You may be doing something similar. I think most crate training information out there says to do something like this.
