You've had one success--so at least you know it's possible. Celebrate the successes, and ignore the rest. The dog will eventually get it. But unlearning a behavior and adopting a new one takes repetition and incentive. Continued good luck!
Well, we're staying the course and are still pretty frustrated (not letting it show we hope). CJ will still hold both until she just can't anymore. She went 56 hours before pooping!
When I was walking her in circles last night I had the thought that a compounding problem is that she probably never had to go while leashed. She was walked 3 blocks to a dog park where she was freed to go and at their lake home she was just let out free. So the whole being on a leash thing is new to her too.
We're certainly not giving up. BTW I asked our vet about the match thing. She did some research on her own and called me to say it wouldn't hurt her and might be worth a try to get her to go more frequently so treating and praise can occur more often. She also suggested a q-tip might be easier to insert and not as short and flexible as a match. Just sharing her comments as I thought they were interesting.
