So recently there have been multiple people posting to a local "Buy/Sell" Facebook page with various puppies for sale.
Another local breeder and I do our best to educate people on purchasing from this site - and when we can disuade people looking to breed their "pet" dogs, and try to educate them on the responsibility, time and money involved in such.
Well yesterday took the cake, ad read:
FREE purebred Malinois puppies
AKC Registered
Will deliver to Whitehorse if you pay gas
One guy responded that he would take 2 males!!
All I could think was how this was going to end badly for those baby puppies. Also, the litter was orininally 10 however, they were able to sell a couple at 6 weeks for $800 but now at 7 weeks no one wanted them.
The other breeder and I are trying to contact the person who bred the litter to take all the puppies that are left - let them grow a little more, vet check them and hopefully get them into a breed specific rescue or foster home, where they can be correctly homed.
Does anyone know of any rescues or individuals in Alaska, B.C. or Alberta who could take some or all of these little guys? I have tried contacting the two emails for B.C listed on the Malinois Rescue of Canada site, but both came back undeliverable.
I am still waiting to hear if my friend was able to make contact and get the puppies, but I want to have something lined up if we do.
Hi Niomi- I am in Anchorage and could foster two pups if needed. I have experience with malinois.
I could provide the basics of vet care (de-worming and puppy vaccinations) as a donation to "rescue". I do NOT think there is a huge working-malinois market in Alaska, but I could provide the pups a home until they can be adopted to a good home- even if that is out of state. There was a litter of malinois recently in Anchorage and I think the "breeder" managed to sell them all on Craigslist. I almost never see malinois around town except at Schutzhund clubs. Even there, they are a relative rarity.
PM me and we can talk on the phone if that is easiest. I have friends in Whitehorse and along the course of the route the pups would take from Haines to Anchorage (mainly mushers) who might be able to help with transport. If you can get the pups as far as the Tok-Glenallen area I could meet you there.
I got some more information on the pedigree. The sire/dam are out of Windrush- which produces mainly show quality or companion quality dogs. For this situation (but not for the breed), this is a good thing. I think the pups could actually make decent pets for normal dog owners and hope that the people who have one do a bit of research. But it's not like they are giving away pups suitable for top IPO/ring or Police/military k9 or pups with a strong civil edge and over the top drives.
Of course, still not a good thing to be giving away pups of any breed, especially malinois.
Thank you Kiersten!! The pups are in Haines right now - I am not sure of the temperaments at all, but it scares me that some were sold at 6 weeks and the others are now being given away at 7 weeks. Which to me indicates they have become too much to handle already.
I really hope the ones that have already found homes ended up in the right ones - for the handler and dogs sake.
I will let my friend know that you offered to foster and I will get back to you as to whether we are able to get them at all. The person "giving" them away is being standoff-ish with anyone who posted anything educational to his ad.
Also, the breeder of the parents has been contacted to see if they can assist in placing the pups. *Fingers crossed*
Hi Niomi,
Any updates on your end? I think I can get two pups out. Are you able to coordinate transport from Whitehorse? The earliest I can make the trip towards Yukon is Friday night. I still need to make final arrangements. PM me if you get the chance.
