My 9 month old male GSD. Trys to bite me and has exceeded twice while trying to brush him and bathe him. So I bought one of those wire muzzles from Leerburg, which are the best muzzles I have ever seen and used,Well first one I have used but works great. The dog lets me put it on with ease. He just does not like to get brushed on his chest or the side of his head. Same with when you bathe him you can't rinse off his chest or side of head with out him really trying to bite you. So now I have been grooming him with the muzzle on and he does want to bite. What worries me is does this mean the dog is going to turn real vicious and bite me all the time now for anything?? Since he has gotton away with it twice?? Well disaplined him saying stop It and he ran away then I put him in his kennel for a half hour. Anyway just looking for some suggestions on how to handle this???
Thanks,
Joel Jarvis
I am curious to what exactly you mean by "tries" to bite.. Is he mouthing you, or has he actually broken skin?
It is not unusual for a young dog that has not learned this is not acceptable to mouth you while you are trying to do something you don't like.
You mention the dog running away? That is a handler error. You need to have full control of the dog. An elevated grooming table is best, but if that is not available then you need to have the dog on a lead. Wrap it around your arm if you need to. Later on once the dog has learned he can not get away with this BS you can groom him with obedience on the ground. My dogs all know to platz and that I will roll them on their sides to do their nails. They don't have to like it, but they do have to lay there and tolerate it.
joel...a little morre information might help in solving this problem...example were do you bath him, inside or outside???...hot,warm or cold water???, are you just using a hose, hose with a sprayer attached, or shower head sprayer??? Do you spray him to rinse or keep it close to the fur??
Is bath time the only time he is exposed to water, or do you play water games with him like when you wash your car or water the garden???
what type of brush, wire or plastic or a comb???and my last question for you is ...do you give him something to mouth or bite on when you groom him????
