Does the dog act any different? Ears, anal glands, skin infections, etc can create problems that you "normally" would be able to see some sort of response from the dog
As far as the rubber I used the rubber matt with my dog prior to this and had no issues. Its the same rubber matts used for horse stalls... I will be taking him to the vet rather shortly. He has not acted any different, he has thrown up twice but im pretty sure its becasue he ate something off of the ground, he always needs to have something in his mounth. Wi will say that his ear color as far as the interior has changed to a darker tone im not sure if that has to do anythig with this, his are cleaned periodically.
If the normal color is lighter then the darker tone can sometimes indicate a yeast infection, mites or some other ear problem. It's often accompanied with a sour smell.
Do they get pretty dirty or is the periodical cleaning just a general part of his upkeep?
I am guessing you are transitioning him from a food containing wheat & corn to a grain free food, how long have you been mixing them together?
You said the smell seems to be localized to shoulder area, down the spine. If your vet rules out yeast, etc. Could he be rolling in something, crawling under plants or shrubs that have a smell?
After you remove the rubber mats, and are sure he isn't rolling in something, and have his ears, mouth and skin checked -- there is this --- Some dogs smell, like some people have intense body odor.
Right at puberty smell becomes stronger.
Check under his collar and the collar itself too, if he wears one all the time. In a warm climate that area can become pretty funky.
