Help! I am not only a first time German Shepard owner, but a first time dog owner as well. I got her when she was 9 weeks old now she is 6 months. She has a horrible habit of jumping on everyone and when you tell her to stop she just gets more determined and jumps even more fiercely. How can I prevent this? She also has hyper fits where she just goes crazy...is this normal?? Also, any advice on toilet training a dog that lives in the back yard at all times...my dog does everything, everywhere. I have tried walking her but she NEVER goes outside of the yard.
1) Your dog seems to be suffering mostly from a total lack of obedience training. She doesn't know what is expected of her, which would explain why she does just the opposite of what you want her to do (and also, probably, the "hyper fits"--an attention-getting device). I would begin by reading Ed's articles on basic obedience training at http://www.leerburg.com/qaobed.htm.
2) Which leads me to a question: If your dog "lives in the yard at all times," how much interaction do you have with her? GSDs are very intelligent (and hence, easily bored) dogs that need a high level of interaction with their human "pack". I am guessing that your dog is probably overly obsessed with marking her territory (the backyard) because the backyard is the one thing that is exclusively "hers". You need to spend more time with this dog. Obedience training and play would be a nice place to start.
