I don't know much about FR and their clubs, but if you find a beginner-friendly SchH club, you don't have to be advanced or prepping for competition. You can work on your BH, which is extremely basic, and you will get help from people that are familiar with the type of dog that you have and the type of training that interests you.
To my knowledge the AKC scent work in the Utility class is the only nose work.
The dog is required to fetch a scented article with the handlers scent on it, among five identical articles with the Judge's scent on it.
This is done twice. Once with leather articles, then again with metal articles.
I've signed up for a advanced K9 Nose Work class in June so I'll be sure to ask.
I would actually really like to get Axle into some sort of arson training, or even narcotics. I am a firefighter here in town, the State Police is the only ones I know of that have an arson dog (she's a lab, so cute.)
This is more right now what I am looking at, dogs are searching for Ansie, Birch & another scent...
Of course all of this would depend on if the dog possesses the needed amount of appropriate drive for the work.
Just because a dog has high prey drive doesn't necessarily mean he possesses a VERY high amount of hunt drive needed for search work. They are two different things.
Found a local training company that does K9 Scent Work - about 30 minutes from my house which is great. It's going to be 6 1/2 hour classes that will be private, decent price as well. I'll keep everyone up to date on his progress, if the hunt drive is high enough I may follow through with narcotics training however I highly doubt that it would be any main use or anything besides bragging rights.
