Well, that pretty much substantiates Eds statement that there will come a time in every dogs life where a distraction will become more valuable than the reward we have to offer. I hope he's found safe..
Dog is still on the run. It made its way to a town just north of its home. Maybe 10-15 minutes by car. It's a 17 month GSD that was being walked by someone who was not its handler (so says the local news reports, I have little faith in them). Dog saw a deer and took off. Latest reports have it closer to its own home now. I really appreciate everyone's input. This dog was named after an officer that was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Thanks again for all the ideas. As it turns out, the dogs handler was not at home when the dog took off. The handlers wife took the dog outside to feed it and the next thing she knew the dog was off and running. It all turned out for the better this morning.
A local kennel housing one of our PSDs allowed the dog to get loose. Well, not really allowed it...a worker tried to corner the dog to get it back into the kennel from an open fenced area and the dog jumped a 6 ft fence. A multi-agency search for 6 hours finally found the dog dead 6 miles from the kennel. A car hit the dog on a dark road. The driver never came forward even though a PSA by our commander was done on the local news stating no charges would be filed due to it being an accident. Sucked for the handler who was out of state, raced home, joined the search, then found his partner.
