The problem you have I would think is that the associated materials where gold is normally found. Take quartz for example...you may have tons of quartz but only a mere ounce of gold. Then you have the issue of gold encased in certain materials effectively isolating and locking in any odor gold may emit. Gold generally isn't found in large quantities so you may find a 10th gram of gold among tons of other debris. Dogs are amazing creatures but I'm a bit skeptical in the practical use of prospecting with them.
I was thinking more along the lines of searching for lost items, like people do with a metal detector on the beach, as opposed to prospecting for potential mining locations.
I'll try it with Fama. She imprints really easily.
The only reason I brought up mining is because the OP included it in her post. I had considered lost jewelry (I'm a big metal detecting geek) but am still skeptical. Besides, I'd rather used my detector instead of my dog. More reliable and lasts longer. Sometimes I bring the dogs with me and they help me dig
There are some areas near me that have old tailings piles. They produce an occasional nugget.
For most gold prospecting I agree that it would not work or just not be practical. A good topographic map would be more likely to find you gold in my area. It's down in the washes for the most part.
I was just curious about whether it's a possibility since I didn't trust any of the sources of info I'd seen on it.
If you need a small amount of 24k gold you could go to a pawn shop or gold seller and ask to buy a part off of broken jewelry they've bought for gold scrap.
Could a dog be trained to sniff refined gold, to assist in policing smuggling, or to locate itwms or caches?
There's the question, eh? If large quantities of metals put out a detectable scent then, yes it can be done. Only issue is....you need LOTS of gold for training aids (which could be problematic ) and...is there really a problem with gold smuggling? Maybe not here but Africa or South America? I don't know.
