I'm hoping I can get a clearer answer on when to introduce corrections to a dog for not performing a behavior. Currently, I can get my dog to perform all obedience behaviors I ask for when we are either inside or outside in our yard. This will only work while the dog is engaged with me and wants what I have. The moment something more distracting catches her attention (new/unusual sounds or people/cars), she often decides not to perform the behaviors. Do I start using corrections now or wait until she's better under distractions on her own? Also, if a distraction in the home causes her to disobey a command, should I correct her now?
Have you been using a negative marker? Are you certain that you have her attention and that you have some level of engagement before you give her a command in a higher distraction situation?
Correction comes after proofing and from your description, you're still proofing that behavior. Ensure that you have her attention before issuing commands and carry HIGH VALUE rewards when proofing behaviors. If she does not understand why you are correcting her, you will lose value and she'll be less interested in training with you. I would wait.
Yes, I use the word "no" and she usually changes her behavior quickly. I do use a high value reward and she's quite engaged the majority of the time. Certain things just distract her a bit too much for a little bit.
I would suggest upping the excitement level to help with engagement. Build that "funnest thing in the world" reputation with the dog before you start adding corrections.
All the above +
When you are in those high level distractions try putting as much distance as possible between you and the distraction
That requires a bit of effort to find that distance where the distraction is still there but far enough away from you to NOT be a distraction.
As the dog becomes more in tune to you then slowly work you way towards the distractions. This doesn't mean in the same training period. It may take days, weeks, etc for this to happen.
