By way of post script...
I've come to more and more appreciate the time spent with Freya this past year.
Whether it was the time spent cooking her rice and chicken to add a bit of incentive for her appetite, the sitting with her on the couch beside me, taking her out for her constitutionals...
One adapts to the changes over time, and the changes came gradually but steadily. Finally, even with assistance, Freya was unable to ambulate.
Still and all, Freya seemed content to be in her 'spot' in the kitchen, on her rug. She 'arfed' when she needed to get up, and or go out, or to remind me it was time for a meal. She didn't whine or cry. She continued on with a dignity and patience that taught lessons to all of us.
To ascribe human characteristics to a dog is whimsical thinking but she evidenced dignity and character, and strength. Hard to explain but by example she made it seem childish and self centered to complain.
I walk into the kitchen and look to her spot, remembering how she held her head up, her radar ears, her eyes connecting... How it was comforting each morning.
I wake up in the night listing for her 'arf' calling for a trip outside. I miss her hoarse little 'arf.'
Thank you all for your kind words. I am grateful.
