I looked at the news clips and looks like they had civilian search and rescue dogs along with police "tracking" dogs. I honestly think it was just a lack of knowledge on the news organizations part to call them that. In the heavily wooded areas that they were searching, I think a dog that can alert to human scent could still be of value.

I was curious to see what informed opinion would be regarding the claim that Hannah's presence was confirmed by the dog, and that a track was started and followed for a distance.

One of the groups was Dogs East. The probationary period for before joining them can last up to two years! And you must agree to respond when requested at any time of day or night, in any weather, at any location.
