I know this has been covered/debated before but I can't find any of the old threads. I thought ME did a newsletter video on it too but no luck finding it.
Will squeaky toys for a young puppy cause a chewy bite later on a sleeve or tug? I've got access to a bunch of decent quality dog toys for my pup but many of them have squeakers in them.
forget the bite, the problem, beside being frikkin annoying, is the squeakers invariably come out no matter how good the quality, can end up inside yr dog.
if the point is a boredom tool then get a solid but flexible toy smeared in a food paste.
on my pups I used some rubber pot things smeared in vegemite, the pups pushed them around the yard for hours trying to access the paste.
for the heathens here (considered the most foul vial tasting substance by most US citizens);
I use a squeaky toy for engagement games. Since I follow the rule of picking up MY toys when we are finished playing, I don't have to worry about my dog destroying the toy and swallowing the pieces.
The dog should know the difference between playing with a toy and doing bitework. My dog's bite is not affected. I guess if the dog had unlimited access to the toy and chewed it constantly, his bite may eventully be affected, but biteworkn is a completely different game.
If a dog has issues with his bite FOR ANY REASON, that can and should be resolved before going any farther with the work.

This would be for entertainment while the pup is supervised in an ex-pen. The toy would be removed/repaired long before pup got to a buried squeaker. Squeaky toys don't bother me.
Something to be aware of is that squeaky toys can cause dogs to be obsessed with the squeak. Not a problem for many dogs but can be with higher drive dogs. I generally don't use them because my dogs often get super.excited. and can't think around the toy.
