I believe the Spitz name, common in my day is now called the American Eskimo and is bred in three different sizes.
One of the Chow colors is a cream color, not to far off the picture of the mystery dog.
Bob, to the best of my knowledge, the Finnish Spitz and the American Eskimo are Two DIFFERENT Breeds -- Amercan Eskimo Dogs are always snow white or white with faint "biscuit" patches, while neither the Chow-Chow nor Finnish Spitz are bred to have white coats ... To my eye anyway, the picture Tracey posted leans more toward the FS side than the CC side, but who knows
Bob is right insofar as the American Eskimo Dog is a spitz type and is bred in three sizes. But the term "spitz" is really quite generic and does not refer to any specific breed. It is more of a "type" of dog which includes many breeds, and a few of them do indeed have "Spitz" in their names. Example, the Finnish Spitz and German Spitz are recognized breeds.
The breeds encompassed are many different sizes (think Pomeranian, Samoyed) but they have in common a northern origin, with thick undercoats, small pointed ears, tails usually carried curled over the back, etc.
In my mind, it's akin to calling a dog a "terrier" or a "hound." It's just a descriptive term for a group of breeds or cross-breeds that share certain common characteristics and a common ancestry if you go back far enough.
I google imaged the Finnish to show Laura, and her face lit up!
Her parents got Penny when her mum was pregnant with her, and Penny was 14 when she had to be put to sleep, so it was a long friendship
She was really pleased you all helped to identify her, and said to say thank you to everyone
Brought tears to my eyes, Tracy -- There's nothing quite like the memories of dogs from our childhood ... "FIN-NISH / FIN-NISH / FIN-NISH", YAY Glad to have helped !!!
