I need some re-assurance with my pups raw diet...I went to the vet and while she was honest and said she doesn't know much about it as she feeds kibble, she wants to make sure he isn't deficient in any area's...etc...he is 11 weeks old...

So, here is his history and what I give him...at the breeder he had ground chicken backs and necks, tripe, organ meat, and pureed veggies with some knuckle bones once a week...

At home he is now on whole ground up chicken (cornish hen size without the organs/innards), beef muscle meat, heart, and organs, and I will be incorporating tripe, chicken, beef, and pork necks and some other RMB's. I try to approximate and make sure each meal is 10% organ meat, and since the ground chicken is the whole chicken I am thinking he is getting the right amount of bone to meat ratio but it may be a bit high as he is a tad constipated.

I also bought some smelt and sardines to through in soon to see if he likes fish...I also started incorporating two raw eggs a week. I also will be getting a premixed bag of chicken, beef, and pork with bone in that has some alfalfa, kelp, and DE in it..however this is expensive so I will only be giving this sparingly...and am on the search for a farm supplier for more sources of meat like pork and also chicken feet etc..

I may also start giving some salmon oil and vitamin E supplements soon...

So my question is, from the above, is this well rounded enough that he will get everything he needs as a growing puppy...should I give the salmon oil and Vit E now? Also, his stool is firm and small, with some white bone in it but it is mostly brown...he seems a bit constipated but not that bad, better then diarrhea....

For a pup, should I be using the 2 to 3% ratio of his grown weight or the 5 to 10% ratio of his current weight (this is what I have been using, so he gets around 1.5 lbs total a day)

Any advice from the Raw feeders to put my mind at ease would be great..sorry for the long post....

I'm a long-time raw feeder, currently with a 9-week old pup on raw--the 7th pup I've raised on raw in the last 10 years.

I'd say your diet sounds super. You've already deduced it may be a tad bone-heavy, but that's easy to adjust. Continue to add variety over time. I think you can start the fish oil and e now. Start with a small dose first (like any new diet ingredient).

I base diets for pups based on 2% of adult weight. But all the "math" formulas eventually get you to approxately the same meal size---and all are just a starting point anyway. Adjust based on the pups appearance and activity level. Pups need a lot of food relative to their body size. So much that you may even need to split it into multiple meals a day. Too much food in a single meal can cause loose stool (but it doesn't sound like you're having that problem.).

right on, thanks so much Tracy, just got his RMB, tripe, fish tonight..he didn't love his sardines though....I will find a way to get more beef meat/heart or other meat source to incorporate so bring down the bone ratio....thanks...

Turkey is another cheap option that I don't see on your list. Breast meat or ground turkey for MM; any turkey parts are good RMB--necks, drumsticks, whole birds, etc.

Cooked eggs (ie scrambled) can also be a MM stand-in.
