So I am finally getting our new family addition. I have two options and the main difference is age.
My question: With using the puppy/dog raising techniques found in the dvd and articles here is there any disadvantage to a 16 wk old dog. I are leaning towards black which is 16 wks and the black sable is 5 wks. Will I have any engagement or leadership issues with a 16 wk old that would push me to getting a 8 wk old. I would presume the older pup isn't getting one on one attention or training so it has bonded a bit to dogs.
or is it easily overcome with just following all the info from dvd and articles from here.
I would go with a younger pup. Research is showing more and more that early socialization/training/environmental exposure enhances brain development in young pups. The first "early" window for this closes at about 12 weeks old so I would go with a younger one to take full advantage of this early (important) learning and development period.
firstly I do not see what colour has to do with it.
secondly I detest puppies, you know more about a dog at 16weeks than at 5 weeks, I try to minimise the gamble when it comes to a 10+ year investment.
the older pup will tell you more about itself than a 5wo.
assuming the 16wo has been raised and bred properly there should be zero issue with leadership that would not occur if the dog was 5wo.
dogs do not really get owned by you until about 18mo, till then they are just as happy to got to any friendly that feeds and plays with them, and I would hope so or commercial dog selling would be impossible.
FWIW, by the time my pup was 16 w/o he had been to several outdoor festivals, had exposure to 50+ new people of all sizes/ages. Actively participated in a SAR demo. Had traveled over 1000 miles in the car with me. Had experienced dozens of new environments.
Those early weeks seemed to be incredibly productive for me. And, unlike Peter's experiences, my youngster was actively choosing to be with me (in a room full of fun familiar people) and do stuff with me from about 12 w/o on. Would he adapt easily to another person? Yes. But the early foundation did help shape our relationship
I think the OP only mentioned color because, psychologically, that is the visual image that he identifies them by.
I agree about imprinting a younger puppy. That will always be my pref. You control his environment from the git.
Additionally, when dealing with breeders, you want to know if the older pup had been returned by a previous buyer, and/or why that pup had not been rehomed already.
