I was wondering about how long it should take a healthy 4 month old GSD to digest 5 or 6 chicken wings. Also, I've seen people talking about feeding vegetables. What are some basic things that are good to start with? I am assuming they are all uncooked, right? Thanks for your help.
Hi, I feed small amounts of raw Broccoli, spinach, squash, bell pepper, pumpkin, basically any veggie that grows above ground is good. It need to be mashed or blended up to break up the cellulous.
There is a lot of information on this site about the raw diet - it's easy but you need to provide a range of items to ensure good nutrition for a growing pup.
Sorry, don't know about the digestion time. Hope someone else can cover that bit.
I've heard varying opinions on digestion time for raw food but it is somewhere in the ballpark of 5-8 hours, if my memory is working.
Kibble takes much longer for the body to digest as it is processed and the body has to work harder to break it down.
Veggies are not tolerated by all dogs and I feed very few. It's an individual thing with each dog. Trial and error is how you find out what your dog likes, and digests well. Broccoli is a big no-no here............. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> GAS CITY!!!
From my understanding, natural foods digest faster and easier than that of unnatural (i.e. 'dog food') does. Natural foods have their own enzymes which aides in quicker digestion which means less gas for the dog. If your dog has a hard time digesting, you can purchase chewable pills for your dog that contain enzymes.
