I know there are books on leerburg and I use the leerburg/ellis approach to dog training; however, I do know that he uses classical and operant conditioning.
question: to study this from a more scientific (for lack of a better word) side of things what are some books. For example, if I were to be a student of this and didn't have leerburg and Michael where would I go to learn more about this kind of dog training.
"where would I go to learn more about this kind of dog training."
SeaWorld.
Daniel, you could go back to BF Skinner, considered the "Father of Operant Conditioning". The link below includes a nice overview and a list of books to reference.
IMHO the absolute best books on training of all sorts and also dog behavior is the three volume set of
APPLIED DOG BEHAVIOR AND TRAINING by Steven R. Lindsay
These books are more like college text then actual training manuals but they cover tons of training methods and behavioral issues and reasons for both.
I have 60 yrs of collecting dog training books/videos but this set was still a must for me.
Be prepared to sell a couple of your kids.
I took a while getting mine with Bday, Christmas, Father's day, LB gifts certs from family.
See if you can borrow or otherwise preview those books before you shell out the cash. I'm not a fan of them and if I hadn't gotten a set for free I wouldn't own them. So many of his "solutions" are the convoluted stuff behaviorist come out with when a regular dog trainer would have fixed the problem much more quickly and simply with the same result. It's one of those "do I need to study for 2 years and be an expert in plumbing to replace the broken handle on my toilet?" things.
Other people love the books. I can't stand them although I may have to force myself to read them. They'll be a professional development read for me though. I could never read them for fun.
Are ya saying that I'm crazy whey I get mine out with a bag of popcorn and a soda when I read them.
I do agree that just repeating what the behaviorists and scientists claim will never put them on the same level as those that actually get out and do it even at the basic levels of training.
The foundations of those claims may be great but just get out and do it.
It WILL be a different experience all together then telling others how it works.
