So I have an ear question. My dogs ears are up. She is 7 months old. Now when her ears are wet the tips flop down a bit. When she is at a trot and the ears go back like they do the left one also flops at the top. For example when she eats and her head is towards ground her left ear can flop. It's mainly the one ear. Now apart from theses situation their straight up like they should be. When she is training or just alert they are perfect. So what I am saying is one ear isn't the just flopped down just laying there. It almost like she can control it. In public when she is either attentive to me or alert to surroundings their perfect. Around the house eating or playing in water or running they flop. Sorry, I feel stupid with this situation/question but I want to fix it if I can.
Should I tape the ear up just to allow it to get stronger? She is on supplements for cartilage and what not.
I was told, that when you rub and squeeze the ears to much in a young dog, that that breaks tiny blood vessels in the ear, and it makes the situation worse.
My dog had problems, and the breeder told me to tape the ears.
At the end they are up, but more floppy than other Shepherds ears.
My preferrred method of taping is to just put a single loop of masking tape around the ear, cone the ear, at the place where it is wanting to crease and fall over.
The risk with any tape in a dog of this age is that the dog scratches at the ear, and then you have a hematoma, or cauliflower ear, which requires veterinary intervention and then the ear won't ever stand.
At 7 ms,your dog is still a pup. I think if the ears are up when the dog is alert and attentive, they will likely stand perfectly at maturity.
Others have more experience with big shepherd ears -- I suppose you could try taping, if others recommend that. Just watch the dog's reaction, and don't make a mess!
If her ears have gone up, they will almost definitely go up and stay up! It may just take longer for the cartilage to harden than the average dog.
After having my last two boy's have their ears down until closer to 11 months, I don't worry before then anymore LOL (AS long as the ears have been up before!)
Here is my boy, Hellboy, and how his ears went through their stages. His ears also never stood fully until 11 months - WAY later than the generally accepted 6-7 months. But you can see his ears are VERY large!
9 Weeks:
13.5 weeks: (from here they both went down until closer to 7 months)
