Not really... I have had a couple friends who have had to have pieces of stick surgically removed from the back of a dogs throat. One in particular cost close to $3000 through three surgeries to get the darn thing out.
We don't encourage stick play around here!
Would you let them play with a box of toothpicks? Same idea!
Just swap the stick for another toy... just like you would for something else. Play the presto chango game enough times and they will probably ignore the sticks...
NO...sticks are not safe, especially for puppies that not only chew but swallow pieces of them. I have had a recent experience with this, my 5 month old Malinois loves to carry sticks, shoes, toys, whatever he can grab. when he was about 3 months old he grabbed and swallowed a wishbone shaped twig (unbeknownst to me) He got HORRIBLE diarrhea, never really lost attitude or drive but this is a pup that had just a month before had exploratory surgery for an intestinal torsion due to swallowing ROCKS.
Long story short, he pooped out the stick (with help from me and a rubber glove)and has had intestinal troubles ever since. The vet feels that the stick perforated the mucousal lining of the whole GI tract and he now has inflammatory bowel disease. Many MANY dollars later and lots of time at the vet on IV's and we are just now getting him off most of the meds and trying to play around with diet.
So please be aware when your puppies start chomping on sticks!!
I'm really glad I asked .. I'm going to go in the backyard and pick up all the stick tomorrow (hard since its over a half acre of light woods where I let them roam.
But I don't want my puppy getting sick. I guess there are no stupid questions when you're a novice.
Thanks Thanks for your replies. You very well may have saved my puppies!
