This is my first post on the forum here so ill start with a little intro.
Im from Australia and I purchased my first dog which is an american staffy (also grown up around dogs in the family home) about 1 year ago. In the past year ive developed a serious passion about dog training and have been learning from wherever i can! My staffy has medium balanced drives so he is good to work and learn with.so over the next year, ill continue to work with my staffy and keep learning
In 2017 i will be potentially looking at a schutzhund pup. Essentially, my question is, does this pup need to seperated from my staffy if i am to raise it as a schutzhund dog? Or do they need to live seperately until the schutzhund pup is of a particular age?
Ditto on what Bob said. I want my dogs to think that the sun rises & sets on me. I am the source of everything wonderful in their lives.PERIOD. Even when I had 3, two that were pups..that was still what each one thought.
Also not all adult dogs tolerate pups well. I used walking together as a means to have them spend time together. You don't want the pup pestering the older dog or the older one bullying or correcting the pup. Takes a balance. ALso not all dogs get along at all.
Took almost 2 years before the 2 I have now to get along without trying to push each other's buttons to mix it up. They can still have their moments. My male has a temper & a short fuse. The jerk.
A great deal will depend on the individual dog's temperaments and sociability with other dogs. You will deal with it as you learn.
And I think as Bob and Anne said, making sure you spend plenty of individual time with each especially the new one since your dog has already matured and bonded with you.
I just did the same thing myself. It was a new experience for me since I had never owned more than 1 dog at a time.
My big mellow male is 3.5 years and not a real player. So it was easy in that respect. I have spent a ton of time with her learning about Schutzhund, tracking etc., joining a club and doing things I never could do with my male.
In a year or 2, I am planning on breeding her and keeping the male I want. Then, I will be on this board asking 10 million questions about living with 3!! LOL!!
