Cathy!!!!!! Thanks for the explanation and the work you made for me. I'm lacking the words out of astonishment and I was laughing my head of! How is it possible to work on a text, which can not be seen ??? Do you have some magical power or how the heck did you do this?

Hi Bob! The eye contact is already quite good, unless there is a big unexpected distraction. I have learned it in Marks Relationship course and also in Forrests DVD in the way you describe.
Practising the heeling first without the dog is a brilhant idea. It is really a great help in the actual training, when I don't need to think on various things.
I've already begun with this today with the result, that my husband came in, gave me strange looks and then shook himself with laughter. Probably thought his wife was going crazy. I didn't explain him anything, said he was distracting me with his stupid sniggering and should better disappear. But he was bright enough to finally guess what I was doing.
Training without dog I will now practice with other exercises too.
Just great! No problem if someone catches me by making odd movements and giving verbal commands etc. to myself. They shall think whatever they want.
Thanks a lot!

I spent hours in the training room at MES working with the invisible dog before class started .
One of the ( many ) things I learned down there was the importance of reward placement and in this particular instance , the dog does not have to be looking at a specific thing like your eyes or hand or an object but rather at a space where he knows to reward will be delivered every time .

It may seem awkward in the beginning but it wont take long to use your peripheral vision to keep track of the dog's position.
This is just one more reason to practice the heeling pattern without the dog.
You don't want to be worrying about the dog's AND your body posture/position/heeling pattern/etc at the same time once in the trial ring or field.
Hmmm, I think I may have found my problem. I have reduced peripheral vision compared to most people and I wear pretty strong glasses so what peripheral vision I have is very blurry. No doubt I compensate by turning my head a bunch and Maverick has picked up on that focal point. Definitely re-teaching this with that armband focal point. I think a head/face one is just not going to work for us.

When I started in organized OB competition in the late 70s -early 80s my teacher used to put yellow stickum type foot prints on the floor for us to learn the foot work.
That was actually pretty distracting to some of us because she was 4'11" and I'm 6'2".

Cathy, thanks for revealing the secret! That's awesome! I would never have come up with this idea. Even my husband, who has worked in his job almost a lifetime with computers has never seen this yet. You seem to be a very smart girl!
