The "average" vet is the last person I would ask about training and nutrition.
Vet school may teach how to handle a pissed off cat or dog in order to give it a shot or inspect it but nothing teaches the new vet about actual training.
As for nutrition, most nutrition classes in vet schools are sponsored but major dog food companies.
What do you think their going to push? It's probably stacked in their waiting room for you to see.

Mike, I like your approach. I have a nearly 2 year old Mal that I got at 10 months. He ain't no pansy, but he is his Mama's boy. The Hondo quote you sign off with also applies to my boy, as he ain't the pettin' kind either. Unless you're his Mama. Or his Papa. The foundation of trust really must come first and learning to accept handling will follow. The vet in this case is, unfortunately, ignorant on this matter and his/her advice is unsound and unsafe. I don't feel most vet's are th e best source of behavioral advice. Lucky we have access to people like those like Cindy and Ed at Leerburg.
