Hoots is 13 in a couple of weeks, and along with the milky eyes and grey face, he is quite lumpy on various parts of the body, and recently has started to stumble on walks, and his hips are getting clicky.
I have him and Bon - 12 now - on pure green lipped mussel, which is helping with mobility in Bon especially, and because I don't want to put Hoots through any stressful exams at the Vets, I was wondering if there is any other supplement that could help his poor old bones.
He can't do long road walks anymore, and is happy to plod around the fields while the girls charge about, although I have noticed he gets puffed quite quickly, and wondered if the fatty lumps have anything to do with that. He is an old boy now, but I would like him to be comfortable in his later years.
Tracey, while I don't have any personal experience with it, I know a number of people who highly recommend Glyco Flex. It comes in three different strengths, depending on your dog's needs.
It does contain mussels, not sure if it's the same exact one you're already feeding, but it has additional ingredients, too, which I believe vary within the three formulas.
I've had old dogs before, and my current two are getting up there, but I've always had to deal with other old-age type issues and not so much mobility and joint pain. I wouldn't hesitate to try the Glyco Flex if needed, though.
To add another choice for you:
Several years ago, I found an article on-line about the use of "undenatured type II collagen" - aka UC-II and it mentioned it's use in trials on senior dogs - good reading: http://www.medsci.org/v06p0312.htm
I too have a 12-y-old GSD with bad hips. A couple years ago, she started gradually shortening her daily walks by about 50% or more. After about 3-4 weeks on the UC-II, she starting increasing her walks and soon was back up to her previous distances.
After a couple years on the stuff, I sure there is increased joint problems, but she's still taking those walks and able to handle the stairs in the house.
I use Schiff Move Free Ultra from Costco, about $15/month.
I will see if it's available in the UK, you are so lucky in the US, you seem to have much more available and better priced products than we do, I will have a google and see if anyone stocks it here.
