I have 3 month pup that I would like to start training for schutzhund tracking. However I am new to this and still have alot of research to do. Can someone give me advise on how I should start ? Any info would be appreciated.
Welcome aboard! You should really try to ask more specific questions. There are whole books dedicated to this subject. Try to narrow it down a bit. Example: Does anyone know of a good beginner tracking book?
I will agree with Vince on you should get a couple of tracking books to start you off. I will however expand on where I began. I simply started by teaching my dog the work "such" or search. I did this by hiding treats in my living room under shoes, blankets, etc.... I told him "such" and pointed to the ground making a path to the treat from where we were the whole way. It took about 2 days for him to put two and two togther, and he would search them out all by himself whenever I said "Such". I played this game for about a month. Then I started with a 25 foot track in morning dew on grass in the back yard. I woudl make a scent pad "square" and scuff my feet for 25 feet in a straight line putting treats every 10 feet. I then took him to the scent pad and issued "such" and pointed to the scent pad, he knew what to do from there! I added turns every week as we went along, seperating treats further and further apart.
He now will do 5 90 turns and go for about 200 feet at 5 mo old and never misses a beat, with one treat in the first 10 feet and one at the end.
Leute mögen Hunde, aber Leute LIEBEN ausgebildete Hunde!
How about "Tracking From the Beginning" by Gary Patterson, "Tracking Dog" by Glen Johnson, or "Training the Competitive Working Dog" by Tom Rose & Gary Patterson? Personally, I like the Johnson book, but it focuses on AKC tracking, not SchH.
