Your Grandfather sounds like a lovely man, how fantastic for you to have known him growing up.
I believe we meet up with all our beloved friends at the Bridge, Maggie will be welcomed with open arms You know, I have wept for that dog, a dog I never met, which probably sounds irrational and over sentimental, animals give you that unconditional love, they just don't always get it back, says something about humans doesn't it?
This reminds me of my all-time FAVE television series, "All Creatures Great and Small", based on the James Herriot autobiographical trilogy !!! I remember the old Yorkshire farmer with a heart-of-gold & his faithful retired draft horses in that program
Wonderful photo of your grandfather and his team, Kelly! Thanks for sharing. I, too, was fortunate to have had wonderful grandparents growing up. Not a day goes by that I don't think about them and miss them.
That is a terrific photo, are the team Clydesdales? We have an agricultural college nearby in very rural Norfolk, where they have Shires and Clydes, they get the students to learn how to plough a straight line the old way, just to appreciate the difficulty, and demonstrate the power of a good working relationship with the horses.
The horses are Belgian Draft crosses. They worked everyday on the farm, and they set several horse pulling records here in Wisconsin. They (along with my grandfather) are still in the Hall of Fame and there is a pull named after him.
The picture was taken at a horse pull competition, so they are all dressed up with their fancy harness with ivory drops I still have the harnesses and the drops (the white circles) hang in my house.
The horse on the right (Prince) is the first horse I ever sat on - I was 3. I used to ride along behind them on the eveners - dangerous with normal horses, but Prince and Captain were so gentle they never set a foot down without thinking about where it was going when us kids were around.

I wish more farms were less mechanised!
ASIDE: I just watched a DVD filmed in rural Norfolk around the Broads featuring Charlotte Rampling & Tom Courtenay titled, "45 Years"
