At my house, Threshold Protocol consists of 3 parts:
1) Sit & Leash-Up
2) Sit-Stay while Exterior door is being opened & owner exits First
3) Follow owner out the door, and Sit-Stay AGAIN while door is being Closed
Yesterday was extremely chaotic, so I was Preoccupied & Distracted -- Somehow, didn't even notice that I did NOT actually succeed in getting Adobe's leash attached to her COLLAR while Leaving the House
She could have come flying out behind me & been loose-at-large in the twinkling of an eye (Adobe thinks doing huge 360s around the neighborhood in "selective deafness" mode is Heavenly) -- But instead, thanks to THRESHOLD TRAINING protocol, she ran out after me, did a PERFECT Sit-STAY and waited for me to snap her leash ON properly !!! What a GOOD girl, Adobe
I agree with Candi and Bob that teaching a dog the most basic protocols, following simple commands, good household manners, like not charging through an open door, is one of the most important things we can do. Every dog owner should be teaching their dogs these basic types of behaviors, whether you are a sport dog competitor, or your dog is your hiking companion, or your dog's main purpose is family pet and chief couch potato. You may save your dog's life someday!

Good girl, Adobe!
YES Teaching our dogs that, "Mama don't allow NO jail-breaks around here", is truly a Life-Saver !!!
