I have a 4 year old Mal/GSD, Fawna that has severe allergies. We started an allergy shot regime a few months ago, but she had a flare-up and got an Aural Hematoma. Initially, it wasn't too bad. But after running her with the ball over the past couple of days it got worse. (dumb move in hindsight)
Seems like I need to curtail her high energy activity. Does anyone have any suggestions on how long I should wait to exercise her again? I guess I should just do more work with obedience to give her mental stimulation. This situation is a bit of a bummer since she loves the ball and really goes after it.
Should I consider surgery for a faster recovery? I don't care if her ear flops down from here on out, but I want to exercise her without risk of more fluid filling her ear.
I have a male GSD who also ended up with a hematoma. Despite my efforts to prop his ear up to allow it to drain quickly, it never cooperated. It actually drained pretty well anyway and did not leave a "cauliflower ear", but it no longer stands. He just gives me goofier looks now!
They can be drained, but if/when they fill back up with fluid, it can look like a crime scene if they shake their heads!
As far as activity, I would restrict running for a bit, since it has caused more fluid build-up. Over the next few days/weeks, the fluid will be absorbed and "dry up" (for lack of a better description). The leaving fluid and remaining scarring causes the ears to curl in the process (AKA cauliflower ear!). The less tissue damage, the less the ear looks like a head of cauliflower.
But all just my experience and opinion!
I hope all heals well without needing further intervention!
