There was a question on the tv new here if our dogs will need special glasses when the eclipse happens.
DUH!!!
Dogs have no more reason to look right at the sun then we normally do so why would they need the glasses .
LOL, we must have been watching the same show!
I was wondering if anybody from our board was in or near the path of totality, or planning to travel to see it. We'll see about 80 percent here. I wasn't thinking ahead and didn't get my eclipse glasses before they became sold out -- and I'm not paying $999 for a pair from eBay -- so I'm just hoping it's a clear day and I can see the little crescents of sunlight on the ground through the canopy of my many trees.

Gosh, Connie, are you equipped for everything with so many links? What would we do without you?!! Thanks so much!
I've heard somewhen we will have an eclipse, but didn't think about it any more. I now googled about it and they say in Brazil it will be seen in the region of Sao Paulo and Salvador (paerially) . So we will probably be able to watch a good part of it here in Cabralia too. We also missed the opportunity to buy glasses. Well so we will press our eyes together or stare a bit deeper in an other glass.
In july 2018 and in Jan In 2019 we will be able watch a total lunar eclipse . In Nov. 2019 a partial mercury transit.
Yes, Bob, people can be weird. I will for the solar eclipse blindfold my dogs for safety reasons (J).
Not only common people can be weird also a whole government. This is no allusion to yours, but to the one here. I don't get it. for producing such spectacles they've got the money but for healthcare and education nothing. (For safety reasons: Just J!)

I've also thought at first some people are weird to ask if their dogs should wear special glasses for the duration of the eclipse.
But today I've read on different medical websites that for all animals if they look into the sun the damage done to the retina can be very serious. They unanimously say that it is unlikely they'll look into the sun, as they on normal sunny days instinctively don't do it. Though animals who like to lie on their back taking a little sunbath might be harmed if opening their eyes for even a moment.
Although all this will be very improbable, they advice to keep them indoors if one wants to very sure.. Glasses they'd take off themselves if not used to them. If exposing their eyes to the sun it is the same risk as for humans. Only that humans intentionally watch the eclipse while animals don't know anything about it.
Only phase when we can take off our protective glasses is while the sun is completely covered by the moon. During the parcial phases before and after thie full one there is the highest risk to burn the retina.
But we don't really need to be of great concern about our animals, just if we want to avoid any risk - better to keep them indoors. Well, mine are outdoor dogs, so I'll run the as they say really very tiny risk.
