My dad passed this week, mom wants to find the perfect organization for donations in lieu of flowers, etc. What she is looking for is an organization that handles getting retired MWDs back to their handlers for retirement/adoption. I would appreciate any suggestions for legitimate charities, please. Thank you so very much. -lisa

Jerry Lyda who lives in Georgia started an organization called Veterans K-9 Solutions. What he dose is rescue dogs from the pound and trains the as support dogs for returning veterans. He's been to Washington and all over the place working to get support for what he does. Not sure if this fits the bill for you but he does a wonderful job of it. old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks

If you want to focus on retired MWDs, you might want to contact Dr. Stewart Hilliard at Lackland AFB as he is one of the heads in the breeding/training program for the MWDs there and would be the one to know who to contact as far as a charity that helps them get adopted out. Lackland has their own adoption program as well for retired MWDs and those that didn't make the cut.
