I was thinking the next time we visit my parents it would be a great opportunity to introduce Greta to the lake. She loves her kiddie pool but it's not deep enough to actually swim. Dog life jackets were on sale at Petco recently- made me think of it.
How cold is too cold (water temp)? Assuming the first few times would be a relatively short experience and we would dry her off right away so I don't trash the car...
I do think my Pits have problems with swimming when then water is cold (22-24 C)
I myself am used to 16 or less, always think I'd b e asking too much from them. My observation was that they have less problems with entering the pool than with going outside afterwards because of the with the wind it feels much colder. Of course I do rub them afterwards thourougly with a towl, but then still they roll afterwards in the grass.
Interesting is that Bruxinha, the Lab-Mix, has no problems at all. She is apart from the temperature the most courageous of all four. Has this partly to do with the breed or/and thicker coat?
The Pits have less protection of course. Nevertheless, Socks, the more active one has less problems with entering, and Slippie although with much more problems has a nearly perfect arm pull. Just things which have to be trained individually?
Charlie with his varios issues of course needs a lot of help not with the cold or with swimming but with finding his way out. Works only with my support.

You don't say where your parents live or when you might be planning a visit. I think both of those could be relevant factors. I hear water temps in Lake Superior, at the northern end of my state, are in the 50s and 60s already, but I imagine anything in the southern states would be just fine for quite a while longer. Greta herself will probably let you know pretty quickly if she's uncomfortable.
Sorry, Cheri, just being overly cautious about posting too much info on the web, lol. Our IT manager has been scaring us lately (on purpose) about the dangers of the internet It will probably be between 40-60*F air temps when we visit, so I'm guessing the water wouldn't be too much cooler than mid 40's.

Thanks!
Oh, totally understood! I only meant to suggest that those two factors would be relevant, not that you should post any specific info here.
My recommendation is that you have your camera out ready to video...if she hasn't had the fun of cooler weather PLUS great temperature weather (...I know, Texas!) then she will probably have so much fun, it will be worth recording!
If she is on the cautious side, she may need a little time, but I bet she LOVES it.
Anyway, if not the water, I bet she will enjoy the temps! Be safe, and have a fun trip!
