GOOD -- How many here remember FAMA who was Adopted by her Handler who used to post on the Leerburg chat-board ... That was a LONG & DIFFICULT process for him, but it did have a HAPPY outcome Eventually.
MWDs used to be considered equipment- there were instances in ww2 where they strapped bombs to dogs and sent them under German tanks to blow up - dog and tank. The Germans started shooting the dogs before they got near the tanks.
I tried to adopt a MWD from Lackland but was denied because I don't have a 6 foot perimeter fence. So, rest assured that these dogs are now being looked after and not just placed anywhere.
The dog the movie is based on died shortly after being placed with her - from cancer.

Kelly, when I watched the Bonus Features on that DVD of, "Megan Leavey", I thought it showed her adopted retiree MWD as living with her till he was about 13 years old -- But maybe I'm misremembering that exact detail ... I'll have to look up this information now, thanks
ETA: Rex was born in 2001 and died at the end of 2012 (age 11 approx) -- They were separated in 2007, and it took her 4 YEARS to get him (2011) ... Then he passed away about One Year later
