Memorial Day, and often we think it a holiday, and a time to celebrate.
When I got out of the Army in 1968, it was a very bad year.
In '68, more than16,500 died, of the 58,000 members of our armed forces who died in southeast Asia. I think about that war. Of sacrifice, of loss, of sorrow. Of the waste.
And of our troops in the field today, and every day...
And I have a hard time celebrating on Memorial Day. Pride, memories, sadness. And Taps.
Take a moment to remember or think about those who serve.
And stanzas 3 and 4 from a poem written in WW I...
For The Fallen, by Laurence Binyon
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Mike A.

Thank you, Mike, for your solemn and heartfelt words. I am grateful to you and the countless other men and women who have so courageously served our country.

I'm grateful, too -- both for the service, Mike, and your post.
Every Memorial Day I again look up this WWI poem about the fallen..https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47380/in-flanders-fields
In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Well, I'm not American. but I do go fully with Mike. I'd have difficulties to celebrate this.
But I guess that lots of Americans celebrate in the sense of honoring all the fallen soldiers, then it is something else. But I know varios people, who celebrate just because it is a celebration day not having the slightest knowledfe of the history of the Vietnamese war. A horrible and completly senseless war.

It's difficult to find the words to express how I feel, but on Memorial Day, and every day of the year, I am grateful for, and humbled by, those men and women who have given their lives in defense of our country and it's values of freedom and democracy.
