Hi Ann, and welcome to the board! I'm so sorry about your husband's passing and all the stressful changes you are now going through in your life.
I can understand your concerns about toxins in the lawn products that will be used, but I think, with a little common sense, you can avoid all but perhaps the most minute exposure -- and let's face it, we all have exposure to toxins in our environment on a daily basis. It's pretty much unavoidable in our modern world.
Ask them not to spray your yard directly -- which you've already indicated you will be doing. Keep yourself and your dog indoors for a few hours after they spray. You're not going to let him or her go onto other people's lawns, anyway, I'm sure, so you don't have to worry that he or she will get a mouthful of grass or dirt that has just been sprayed.
