Still trying to housebreak little rescue Pomeranian. She has started to poop on morning walk but my daughter has been home with her in the evening (I work shifts) and has caught her squatting. She grabbed her the first time and a wee turd fell out onto her foot! The last time, she tried to grab the dog to take her outside when the dog spun around, grabbed the turd in her mouth and tried to run with it! Since then, it is suspected that the coprophagia has happened a couple of times (I'm hoping there is still some nutrition in them, otherwise it's just yukky).
I have continued to tether and most of her indoor peeing happens in the evening. She squats and pees so quickly (doesn't sniff around first so no advance warning) that I've been unable to react fast enough. I take her outside and she stands at my feet looking at me. Last night I stood in the yard with her for ages (in my p.j.'s in the rain). I try walking around the yard but she sticks with me watching me the whole time. I finally gave up and took her in....at which point she peed inside. She is now on Lasix for her congestive heart cough which just makes her have to pee more.
Carpets are taking a beating. She peed last month the same day I had them cleaned--they weren't even dry yet!

Is every single room in your entire home CARPETED, Kim? That little Pom would be LIVING in an x-pen on Water-Proof flooring at my house, be it the kitchen, laundry room, bath, sunporch, or wherever, LOL

Only the basement is carpeted but we have an old dog down there who can't do the stairs so we
spend the evenings with him down there (she is still tethered to me). Our bedroom is also down
there and she sleeps on a cat tree beside the bed....and manages to keep it clean. She does seem to
have an affinity for carpeting when she does her speed pees.
When the old cronks became incontinent, I bought some fairly expensive deodoriser/deterrent spray for the rug. It was supposed to neutralise the smell and deter repeat peeing, it didn't!
In the last year I've just used human sized incontinence sheets and I cover the floor in the sitting room for the few hours while I'm out twice a day. The rug will be replaced when they go, and while it's a pain in the arse laying them every morning, it takes the stress away from me, and I know that they can't help it. It's become my mantra actually, "They can't help it, they can't help it!"
I think that your poor little Pom has had such a lousy life up until now, that you're probably just going to have to go with it.
I'm ever thankful that people like you take these abused dogs and give them some peace and love in their old age. So good on you,, and thank you for caring enough to give her a decent quality of life.

I'm no hero....I looked at her little face and had to take her. I love her to death.
On the other hand, the 9 year old great dane has, for the first time, peed two great lakes in the carpeted basement where he hangs out. Like you, I think I will have to have the carpet replaced when he goes. I can leave doors open when no one is home if the weather is good but it will quickly start getting colder now that we are past the autumnal equinox. Haven't been able to find an incontinence appliance big enough for him.
I know a lady who litter box trained her beagle cross. Might be an idea for the pom.
Not sure if they do dane sized tho, lol.
Has he gotten worse since the pom came in?
You have a heart of gold!
Xpens are great, plenty of space, limited access to rooms unsupervised.

No, I don't think he (the dane) recognizes the pom as the same species! He is used to dogs coming and going all the time. Is an Xpen better than a crate? I'm assuming the pen is for the wee pom and not for the dane--he needs ALOT of room to lie down.....
Daughter is convinced that he will be okay if we make sure he gets out often (he always used to be able to hold it for 8 hrs. but I guess they lose the ability with age?) I think I could get an adult Depends to fit him.
I wonder how this lady managed the litter box training. I tried soaking up pee with a pad hoping that she would go in the same place but she picks a different spot every time.
