I trained my dogs to retrieve a toy and hand it over to me. Recently when they came back tI said Spin (left) and twist (right). At first they let the toy fall and rotated then. They know those two commands well. Then they learned quite quickly that I wanted them to keep the toy in their mouth while rotating.
Then I tried the same but not with rotating but with Sit and other behaviors they know well on cue. But it doesn't work. They let it fall. All three. So I seem to do sthg wrong. but have the impression I'm doing it the same way as with the rotations, which works so well. I don't ask it too often. Never more than two failures, then I do something I can reward them for.
My only idea is to train the Hold it command. ??? I haven't done this until now, because they espontaneously retrieved the toy I tossed.
I'd appreciate every suggestion very much, if someone of you can perhaps imagine what the reason might be.

Thanks, Bob. No, in my case giving the Hold it no one cares. By the way, once they've got it ingrained I can fade it. They'll do it "automatically" without the Hold it.
And no!!! Never corrections for such things. I normally give corrections only for misbehavior e.g. for pulling on walks, something they've really understood.
When they drop it I usually say "No". Would "Nope" be better, is it a sound more impressive.

Of course, does make sense! So I will use too what I've learned from Bob who learned from Connie who learned from Ed who might have learned from Michael, who ...
I googled for the Etymology of that funny word and found lots of theories.
In an online slang dict. they say it comes from Not On Planet Earth.
Do you know if this is true?
