I live near the beach, and everytime I see kelp, I wonder if I should take some home and put it in my dogs' veggie mush. Is this a stupid idea? Is the powdered kelp I buy as a supplement just that same stuff, ground and dried?
I do know to check and make sure that the beaches are approved by the health department for safety and everything. I even have a permit to gather seaweed for eating - it is part of my fishing license.
Cnielsen, Kelp is an incredible source of trace minerals and potassium. When we keep dogs they no longer have the ability to graze on all of the apropiate herbs, grains, and veggies to keep themselves in balance as to trace minerals etc. So I think that kelp is an exellent way to make up for that. The Kelp that you buy has been treated to remove salts. I don't think you can properly do that on your own. Kelp sold for agricultural purposes has also been treated to remove salts. I would look into THAT before trying to make my own.
The Kelp used for supplements is from deep water sources. Kelp is an extreamly good filter. All the crud in the water near shore is taken up in the kelp and retained there. So look at the water, if the kelp is from close to shore I'll bet ther is oil and a ton of other polutants in it. All that junk will be in the kelp too.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Okay, that makes sense, I will skip the kelp. But I might ask the old ladies who gather seaweed to eat what kind they are getting, and give my dogs some every once in a while - if it is safe for humans I'm sure it's fine for dogs. Plus, it would be satisfying to catch something that can't get away.
