((((HUGS)))) Betty, it's so hard to hear about Pinker. I think anyone that has been on Leerburg for a while knows Pinker's story. You've done a fantastic job with him.
Having owned, among many other dogs I've had half a dozen different terrier breeds and two working line JSDs. I've had to put down numerous high drive dogs over the years and it never gets easier. One of the harder ones was an old, blind and deaf Norwich terrier. At 14 he was otherwise healthy but he wasn't happy anymore. Anything he bumped into he attacked be it a chair or a leg. My daughters 130 lb Rotty even avoided him. I will never keep a dog beyond it's happiness. It's just not fair. I know you will do the right think when it comes time.
At various times, I was using Melatonin, Sam-E, and an liquid herbal calming supplement for dogs. Each of these seemed to help a little bit, or for a little while, but there were still many bad nights. Finally, after asking a few different times, my vet agreed to prescribe a sedative. These are known to have varying effects in different dogs, but it worked quite well for mine.
The biggest improvement came when I realized she was having trouble getting up on my bed, where she usually slept. (I know not everyone allows this, and I totally understand.) But I lowered the height of my bed by a good eight inches by removing the bed frame and just setting the mattress and box springs directly on the floor. This made it fairly easy for her to get on the bed again, and it pretty much eliminated the nighttime pacing. As time went on, even in the bed with me she would wake me up, whining and pawing at me. Her heart and respiration rates were way too high, and she was showing some other symptoms that my vet told me to watch out for, and I knew it was time. . . . . .
I know each of us who goes through this is dealing with different dogs, different circumstances, and so there is never one good answer for all of us. It comes down to that bond we each have with that special dog, observing what they are going through, and having to make the very difficult decision of what is best for them. They are unable to make that choice for themselves, but if they could, what would they want?
