It's been a long, long while since I visited this forum but I thought I'd take this opportunity to close the loop regarding our Belgian Malinois, Bailey. Apologize for the long absence.
We had to let Bailey go yesterday. She was one month shy of turning 14 years old and was in declining health. Our hearts are shattered. As a puppy, let's just say things were challenging but over time she became an unbelievably loyal, affectionate, loving, intelligent part of our family. The emptiness around our house now is too painful to describe. In her prime, she was magnificent. She loved all the agility training, obedience/marker training, nosework, dock diving, hitting the hiking trails, etc. I could go on and on about all the ways she lived her life to the fullest but I won't. You all know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to let whatever folks that are still here know and to offer my deepest appreciation to Ed, the staff at Leefburg, and everyone who contributed to this fine forum for all the wonderful posts, articles, and training advice that helped us shape Bailey into the finest dog we could have ever imagined. Best wishes to everyone!
Greg so sorry for your loss. I've been through it many times and know it never gets easier but there are always those special dogs that hurt the most. It sounds like Bailey was one of special dogs that grab our heart from the day they come home till the day they pass on. Remembering all the good things about those special dogs has always taken the edge off of loosing them.
Greg, I am so very sorry to hear of Bailey's passing. I remember when you were posting regularly here about both the challenges and joys of having her as a member of your family. I feel for what you are going through now, having had to say good-bye to her. I know that unbearable feeling of loss and emptiness.
Bailey was such a fortunate dog to have been a member of your family. You took the time to learn about the breed and to keep her healthy and active in both mind and body. I also share your deep appreciation for Leerburg and this forum. I, too, learned so much here that made me a better owner and handler of my working breed dogs.
I know that Bailey took a big chunk of your heart with you when she left, and I hope that, with time, the acute pain will soften and you will be able to look back and feel comfort at the good memories. Rest peacefully, Bailey.
I am so very sorry for your loss, Greg. It’s never easy, but sometimes one of them takes so much of our hearts with them that the grief seems insurmountable. Hugs to you and your family.
Treasured Friend - Author Unknown
I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And shared her silent thoughts with me.
She’ll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favourite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to his golden throne.
Although my eyes are filled with tears
I thank him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me
And for her love and loyalty.
When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know
I shall not fear the transient dark
For she will greet me with a bark.
