Karmen, you might try biotin. It is available in most horse feed (like Agway)& some pet stores that carry equine products or by catalog (in the horse suppliments section). It is used for horses that need help with brittle or 'shelly' hooves.(Dog nail, human nails & horse hoof is all comprised of the same material.) It is available in diferent size tubs & you scoop out the amount needed.( just give a pinch, instead of the scoopfull recomended, usually based on 1000# horse weight) Look into it as an alternative to the geletin. It will be easier to feed (most horses are very finiky eaters & will eat it)& will most likely be more cost effective. Hope this info helps.
Thanks Anne I'll give that a try. Dante's nails have been so brittle even on a raw diet. Raw egg yolks have great biotin BUT the egg whites actually leach out the biotin so I would need to strain the egg whites which is not on my list of things to do everytime I want to feed an egg. Biotin supplement it is..Thanks again
Karmen, you might want to look into supplementing with zinc. It is used alot by mushers to promote tougher feet and has a good effect on skin conditions. I use Nutrazinc from http://www.howlingdogalaska.com and I find that it really works well.
