You hit the nail on the head. I spent a lot of time today reading through Ed's articles and video summaries, and I realized that I had gotten ahead of myself. I'm placing my video orders tomorrow. I may even step back and order the obedience videos first just to make sure that I haven't missed something there before moving on to something specialized. I don't think it could hurt, and I want to build a solid foundation.
Thanks.
Pete
I hope it works for you. My border comes from imported working(hunting) stock and the desire to hunt cute little fuzzys definetly overpowered the human tracking. I also lost some interest in tracking once he started to hunt. That sure didn't help.
Now would you recommend a beginner take a class from someone to teach this or just use the tapes? I took a class and was glad I did as you will encounter problems you need to work through in which an instructor is invaluable. Or can you do it alone with just tapes? I have always tried to train dogs myself but find myself getting stuck somewhere along the line where I need hands-on help. Maybe I am just training challenged
lanegirl,
I would recommend finding a club in your area but be warned I would watch the tapes first to show you what to look for etc. I wouldn't want to see the poor dog get hooked up with a trainer or club that's hooked on compultion training! I saw a few in Germany and what the results were on the dogs CREEPERS and tail tuckers with no happy thought I feel it would be good but again be cautious and for god sake as for another opinion if you just don't feel right or your dog starts to get a change of heart
The tapes will help! and ask people on the BOARD! there is a lot of experience here! use it
This is only my opinion and what I have seen over the years boy I'm telling my age, LOL

Your the only one that can say what your capable of. With experience, you can do by yourself. Without experience, you have to be honest with your training abilities. I would suggest a teacher at first but as Lewis said, be careful.
OOops, sorry I wasn't really asking for myself. I have already taken all the classes. I was just asking in general since the original poster was aksing about tracking info. I found that when I tried to train my dog by myself I always ran into something I couldn't figure out how to fix and that's why I lean more towards a beginner taking classes. I think once you have at least a good understanding of the foundation work you can train your 2d dog without necessarily taking classes. For me anyway, just going by tapes and books was not successful for me, as they just can't cover everything you might encounter. I was glad to have taken all the classes. As a beginner would it not be more advisable to take classes before you make so many mistakes that you mess up all you are striving to accomplish?
The classes would be better for the beginner. As with any class, tracking, obedience, etc, you should go with the thought in mind that YOU are learning what and how to apply, not the dog. Most classes are to distracting for the new dog.Once YOU learn at class, then you apply it at home, with your dog, in practice.
I think I'm going to take the cautious approach and will be joining a club soon. There's so many things to learn, and the help of a knowledgeable person will be invaluable. The tapes too, and I should be getting my first order tomorrow. I can't wait!
