Its a little to do with herding ,we have Komondors ,have had for many years .But i saw this dog on TV < Animal Planet >I think its a herder from Italy is there anyone on the list that knows someone that herds with this bree ? Thanks Peter
These dogs are extremely few and far between. Even in the world. I was talking this summer to a beeder and she told me that at that point there were not one puppy of this breed on the whole planet. Apparently their copulation is a tremendously difficult and ineffective process. I would be really surprised to see anybody actually working them. But there's always someone, you know.
Thanks Alex : i will keep my eyes open for someone that uses the dogs for herding they are still greatley used in Italy >As the Koms are used a lot in west Texas for live stock control, guarding . This might be a good dog to use for the herding ,and moving of the flolks .Thanks again Peter
This breed looks very simular to the puli. I have seen first hand several puli's in the herding arena and have not been impressed. I would not have taken either of them for a working sheep dog on my farm.
However, how good they are at what they do will be influenced by who the breeder is, what traits they are breeding for and how true to the orignial working ability the dogs they are breeding from are.
With it being a newer, rare breed one would hope that they still possess much of their herding ability, but not necessarily true.
Shelly : thank you for the post .I am hoping also that the breed is going to come in as a working dog and the ability to do what it was bred for ,but i know exacly what you are saying . I have heard that they, like the Puli are used as herders and drivers, but nothing like the border collies ,or a good GSD ,and some other breeds that can be worked on the farm or range. Thanks for your input .Peter
No the breed are being brought in England from Italy and i know some people here in the states have them .I have just sent the information to a rancher in West Texas who uses Komondors at guards .And they may be looking at them as another dog to use on the ranch . Thanks Peter
