Does anyone know what major insurance companies are willing to insure you(homeowners insurance)if you have a dog that has had any type of bite training?Schutzhund or otherwise?I've had Rottweilers since 1978 and have never had them bite anyone.During this time ,or at least most of it,I've had Horace Mann homeowners insurance.Last year they sent me a questionaire asking me what ,if any, type of dogs I have? I knew what was coming after reading about dog attacks and the Presa Canario that killed the woman in Calif. After responding that I had Rotties I was dropped.I found State Farm Insurance willing to accept me,but they also asked if the dogs had been trained to bite?Because I don't belong to a Schutzhund club I answered no.I had a number of companies not even willing to talk with me once they knew I had Rotties. So,who is willing to insure Individuals, who have dogs that are on these companies dog hit lists? I'd like to participate in Schutzhund but I also need to be insured. Thanks Ken Mathews
I think you have got to be real careful here. You know the way insurance companies are. If you label your dog a mixed breed and say it doesn't have bite training, you know they are going to supoena all your records on the dog if there is ever a bite. They are also going to interview your friends and acquaintances to see if you have ever told anyone that the dog has "bite" training or protection training. The best thing to do is to try to find a company that won't ask those kind of questions or if they do find a way to answer honestly but don't volunteer any more information than they ask for. I think it's a crock too. The vast majority of dogs that have proper protection training are not the ones that will accidently bite someone. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
There are several companies out there that will insure any breed of dog, and only ask if your dog has ever bitten anyone (humans and animals included), and biting a training suit or sleeve is not biting a person. I have used USAA for the past decade and have had multiple bite-trained dogs of various breeds including APBT. Never volunteer extra information when applying, but
a word of warning, any misrepresentation on your application reders your policy void.
Well,
AllState dropped me many years ago for having four Rotties ( all of whom were therapy dogs, and I competed with all of them in AKC obedience)
I've never had a bite claim, and actually, I've never had an accidental bite in a home situation.
Needless to say, I don't recommend AllState if you own dogs.
Thanks Chad and everyone else.I do want to join a schutzhund club and have always believed that a well trained, socialized dog, that is stable and has been trained to bite is safer and more reliable than the average "pet of most breeds".I also know that giving any false info. to an insurance agent voids the policy.(my dogs are AKC registered as purebred rotties)There would be no way to deny that now.I very much appreciate everyones input.Allstate was also a company that would have nothing to do with me. I have to agree that USAA is great. My husbands mom used to work for them, and we use them for our cars and house. We had to make a claim on the car last year and the service was superb.
