Hi All,
I'm fairly new to the board as well as dog sports. I'm wondering how to determine in what venue my dog would excell. I have a 4yr old GS or Belgian Terv mix. Specifically, competition obedience, agility or sport tracking?? How do you identify based upon your dogs personality/drives what area would be enjoyable for us both? I've purchased Ed's basic dog obedience DVD and she is doing well with sit, down and I'm working on stay now. She is much better on leash now, with flat collar. I'd like to get involved in an "activity" with her and am not sure what area to persue.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Regards,
Linda
I guess the only way to know is to try each and see. And, of course, who says you have to pick only one?
We had the same question for our dog a few months back, but once we looked into each and let the pup try them, the answer became obvious, and mostly for reasons outside our dog's abilities (he seemed to enjoy each). Our local search and rescue goups are all volunteer, and frankly, are filled with a bunch of Barney's who take themselves much more seriously than they do their work. The herding groups were too far away for us to make the regular trips. He loved the agility work, but we didn't want him stressing his joints until he's older. Same for flyball - too many dogs with taped joints in that sport. We even talked to the conformation people  .
Then we tried schutzhund. Great local club, fantastic helpers, good people, and I enjoy it myself. And for the dog, let's just say that when you find the right sport, you'll know it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> .
