Just curious, how are other coping with the High Tempertures and Humidity.
In Louisiana the Temps have been mid 90's with High Humidity. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
We track early in the morning to beat Mother Nature and those PESTY Fire Ants.
Another Question??? Anyone using supplements of any kind either when Tracking/or other Training sessions?? This came up on another board I visit with members here in Louisiana.
Butch, the S&R dogs have to be right on top of the scent to find it. The hot, still air is realy tough for air scenting. We did a water search a few weeks ago. After we made the find, dogs and handlers both were in the water.
Same conditions here. I'm an evening tracker. I lay them so they're ready to run about 20-30 minutes before dark. The dogs stay in the van with the A/C on while they wait, so they come out cooled off and not panting heavily. They have no problems with the heat that way.
I am in Texas and it is hot and humid here 357 days a year. The other 8 days are just hot. We "train" as early as possible, and depending on the start up time, we may train up to as late as noon. If necessary, we will train in the late evening after 7:00pm. And honestly, this is primarily for my comfort as well.
We have to work during the "hot hours" of the day and the performance of the K9 is definitely affected. I think something that all handlers know but is probably the least addressed is the physical conditioning of the handler. My body reminded me back in May that I had not been working myself as hard as I should and it was a bit scary. Now both me and the dog work very diligently on conditioning daily again.
