Can anyone help me determine a way to get my Malinis to let me trim his nails? He doesn't bite at me but runs away when I try. I can't get anyone to help me do it, because they fear the bite and even with a muzzle, they take some hard hits. He is great with obedience and everything else, but he shows definite avoidance at nail trimming time.
Get yourself a grooming table and teach the dog to jump up on it in a positive way. Use treats then put the noose around his neck and teach the dog it's a nice place. Once the dog is comfortable up on the table I would introduce the nail trimming. Put the dog's head in the noose, if you feel you need a stay command give one, then trim the nails. When the dog is done reward him/her. The dog can't run away, it doesn't break your back, and the dog's not in reach to bite. I pull the foot back under the dog and cut the nails so if they tried to bite they can't get to me. I find it works really well and you can brush them better also without strain on yourself. Good luck
