While grooming my dog the other day I noticed that he has some raw spots behind his front shoulder in the "armpit" area as well as behind the upper part of his front leg. He scratches constantly and I never paid much attention to it until I noticed how irritated his skin is. I have tried different foods, different shampoo's all to no avail. Any suggestions on what to do next? Could it be allergy related? I'm using an Allergen shampoo now, and feeding Nutro kibble. He is about 10 months old.
If it is a food alergy somtimes it may take awhile to see results. The main idea behind swithcing food is to make sure you are getting a different main carb source and main protien source. If you are switching foods and the carb or protien source is the same you won't see results. From what I've heard corn is usually the biggest culprit in dog food. Dogs can be allergic to a host of things though. My dog recently went through the same thing and a lamb and rice feed worked out great for him.
I guess I need to check out the ingredients of the bag a little more carefully. I really hesitate to go to raw because of my general lack of knowledge about canine nutrition. Do you guys know of any creams or ointments one could use? He has scratched so much, that he has developed some scabs underneath his coat. I'm surprised he still has hair there.
I had a friend who's dog had the same thing. He just used an antibiotic ointment like neosporin and it cleared it right up..........but I don't know if a vet would give something different.
My 13 year old has horrible allergies. I think she is allergic to herself. She chews so bad that she bleeds bad. The Vet said to give her a benadryl in the morning and one at night, when she is chewing. As well as feed a premium kibble. The chewing has stopped and the spots are clearing up. I have switched to Solid Gold Wolfking.
My pup isn't chewing, although it does seem to be a spot he cannot access with his mouth. Is this what others refer to as hot spots? Again, no noticeable fur loss, just scabbed up and scratched up skin underneath.
I have two guys who have scratching and itching issues. My 5 month old had itchy red armpits and a rash on his belly a couple of months ago. This was diagnosed as a bacterial infection and he was treated with Cephalexin. After that, the redness on his armpits continued, but I bought some Halo Dream Salve to try out and that cleared it right up. Sometimes addition of flax seed oil or salmon oil can help. With my older dog, I have found Borage Oil Capsules have decreased his itching dramatically.
